To dump someone/ To be dumped by someone: this is used when one person ends a romantic relationship with another. It is quite a negative way to say that the relationship has ended and it was because one person wanted it to end.
Example: He is usually the one who dumps the other person but this time it was his girlfriend who dumped him.
To break up with (someone): this is a more polite way to say that a romantic relationship has ended. Also you can use this phrase if it was one person who wanted to end it or both people.
Example 1: My boyfriend broke up with me last week.
Example 2: Me and my boyfriend broke up last week.
To listen in on someone’s conversation: this means the same as to eavesdrop on someone’s conversation.
Example: You shouldn’t listen in on people’s private conversations. It’s very rude.

Anyway, about two years ago my mother tried to set me up with another girl from her work. Of course I refused but she wouldn’t take no for an answer and eventually I gave in and agreed to go on the date. I met the girl at a local café and we chatted a little. She was very pretty but I knew that it wouldn’t come to anything so I didn’t try to flirt or anything and I knew that as per usual I would just end up in the friend zone . After about half an hour I had a real feeling that I’d met this girl before but I couldn’t place her face . Then I suddenly realised that it wasn’t her face I recognised but her voice; it was the girl from the bar a few years earlier. I told her this but she didn’t believe me. So I recalled all of the details that I’d overheard. She was completely floored that I remembered her voice. Anyway, this really broke the ice and we had a wonderful date. We eventually wound up dating and eventually got married. My mother is very pleased!
