looked like a woman who wanted to melt for him, and that took his breath away.
He concentrated, thinking of a place he had been in Chicago before, and suddenly, the room changed and they were in a long room walled with glass. There were dim amber lights running along the floor, and beyond that, all else was dark.
“Where are we?” Selene asked hesitantly, and he wondered if she was regretting her decision.
He realized belatedly that his offer could have easily been a trap, a way to bring her to a group of Corps officers who would have overwhelmed her. Her trust, no matter where it came from, touched him. He held her a little tighter.
“Look,” he said simply, and he walked them over to one of the windows.
Below them, Chicago stretched like a jeweled wonderland. The cars that ran along the busy streets were undaunted by the cold, early morning, creating veins of light that threaded through the city as seen from above. Chicago's famous skyline looked small and far away, and Selene gasped with pleasure.
“Are we at the Sears Tower?” she said in awe.
“Well, it's the Willis Tower now, but yes. It's still a few hours before anyone is going to show up, and we have the place to ourselves for a bit.”
Selene paced in front of the glass with wonder, taking in the sight of one of the country's largest cities spread beneath her as if it was a gorgeous toy, just for her. There was something childish about her wonder, and with a pang, Colin wondered if she had ever been allowed to simply look and take pleasure in what she saw. The life of a rogue was often very difficult, and even one as tough as Selene needed to be constantly on the run.
“I love Chicago, but there are so many places I've never been,” she said with a tone of soft regret.
He bit his tongue. She could if only she would come with him, but instead, he offered her his embrace.
    “Shall we go?”
She looked disappointed, but she snuggled up next to him again, her arms clasped firmly around his waist.
This time, they popped into a room with white walls lit up with amber lights, and Selene gasped when she saw the enormous mural speckled with a multitude of water lilies.
“You're kidding me,” she whispered. “This is the art museum?”
“It is,” Colin agreed. “Do you want to do a quick wander?”

CHAPTER NINE

SELENE COULDN'T ANSWER. She could only walk with wide eyes through the enormous galleries lined with precious works of art.
“This is amazing,” she said quietly. “I never thought that I would be able to see this place without a mob.”
“Well, at this time of day, the great works of art only belong to the night guardsmen and those who can teleport,” Colin said with a smile.
She knew that logically, she was still in Chicago. There was a hum to the city that never quite went away, but in the halls of the art museum, it felt like there was nothing more to the universe than the endless halls filled with some of the most beautiful works that humans had ever created.
“Am I boring you?” she said, glancing back at him. “I imagine this has got to be an old trick for you.”
Colin's laugh was deep and sweet.
“Not at all. One of the most interesting benefits about my power is that I can go almost anywhere I like. I just have to have a good idea of where that might be.”
“So you don't necessarily have to have been there before?” she asked curiously.
“No, but I get in trouble if I haven't been there before.” Colin shook his head wryly. “A friend needed me to come and join him in the catacombs of Paris. I had seen photos and maps. I thought I knew what I was doing.”
“And I take it you didn't?”
“I didn't realize that there were two types of Parisian catacombs. There are the amazingly beautiful cathedral spaces where the tourists go, and there are centuries-old subterranean tunnels where a wide variety of lost, homeless and downright unsocial people go. I appeared in this room that only had
