canât talk to anyone,â Vega replied. âI canât even talk to Filipino cops in neighboring towns. âThatâs not your job, young ladyâ is all I ever hear.â She looked at Hack. âYouâre navy girlfriend, whatâs-her-name, Cassandra?â
âItâs Leeandra,â Hack corrected her.
âOkay, Leeandra. She works at the supply depot, right?â
Hack leaned forward and set his beer down hard. âWhat do you mean? Iâm sure sheâs not involved with black market stuff. Sheâs not the type.â
âIâm not saying sheâs involved,â Vega laughed. âBut maybe she can help.â She put a hand on Deckerâs leg. âMaybe you guys can look around the ship, too. Itâs about navy material, and thatâs your job. Itâd only be natural to do some extra checking on things.â
Decker leaned back and put his hands behind his head. âWhat do you think, guys?â
âCount me out,â said Mo. âYouâll come up with wild schemes, and Hack and meâll be the ones who do the dirty work.â
Decker shot Mo a look of mock surprise. âWhen have I ever talked you into doing something you didnât want to do?â
âAbout every other weekend for the past year.â
âI believe thatâs an exaggeration,â Decker smiled. âI am deeply offended.â
Mo nudged Hack with his elbow. âYou donât need me, you got the new guy to do your âdetectiveâ work now.â
Hank put his hands up as if heâd been accused of something. âI donât like the sound of this,â he said.
âLook, Decker, just go the navy police,â Mo said. âIf the black market has anything to do with Kippen taking a dive, they need to be the ones to investigate.â
âWeâre talking murder,â Decker said, his voice tight.
âHold on, guys,â Vega interrupted. âI didnât say there was a murder. Besides, the navy investigator found no motive, so I doubt thereâs any connection between the missing parts and Kippenâs fall. But I do know somethingâs going on with the black market. Just look around the ship a little. Thatâs all. Iâm just interested in your inventory problem because if thereâs something fishy going on, Iâll need hard evidence to go to my boss.â
Decker sipped his beer, and tipped the bottle toward Vega. âLet me think.â
âMaybe we should wait a week or so and see how things go in the supply department,â Hack said.
âA week?â Vega protested. âSomeone could cover their tracks by then.â
âBut maybe Kippenâs body will be found and itâll be clear it was an accident.â
âEven if they find him, it wonât prove he wasnât pushed,â Decker said.
Mo looked at Hack and pointed at Decker with this thumb. âI donât like the sound of this. All I know is that if Columbo here gets involved in whatever is going on, it ainât going to end well for anybody. Especially you and me.â
âThis could go on all night, guys,â Vega said, changing the subject. âLetâs get out of here. Itâs getting crowded, and the bandâs about ready to start.â
Decker, Hack, and Mo agreed and the three sailors and police officer walked out of Cal Jam and stood on the crowded sidewalk.
âIâm headed to Tâs Tavern,â Mo said. He looked at Hack. âWanna tag along?â
âNo, Iâm going to Leeandraâs.â Hack glanced toward the corner. âGotta find a ride.â He turned to Decker and Vega. âWhat about you two?â
Vega slipped her arms around Deckerâs waist and looked up at him. âWe have dinner plans.â
âI bet you do,â Mo said, with a smirk as he turned on his heel to head toward his favorite dive.
Decker laughed. âUnfortunately for me,
