days we needed a sleepover that involved actually sleeping togetherâsame room, same bed.
I cleared my throat. âThatâs nice of you to offer, but I have a lot of sleep and homework to catch up on.â
Fane smiled slightly as though seeing right through my excuse.
âI wonât bite this time.â
My cheeks burned. I screwed up my face and scowled. Smug bastard.
âHowâs your thigh?â he asked, eyes dropping to the tender spot near my groin.
âHowâs your tongue?â I shot back. Heâd bit it hard enough to draw blood.
âAs good as new. See?â The fiend ran the tip over his upper lip.
Rather than recoil with indignity, my body quivered in hunger. Blood cravings were one thing. Fane cravings were a hundred times more demanding. He had a knack for getting under my skin anytime he desired.
Before I could respond, my phone rang.
Relieved by interruption, I moved away from the heat surrounding Fane to fish my phone out of my pocket.
âHello?â
There was a momentâs pause. Fane raised one eyebrow.
âYou wanted to speak with Dante,â Giselle said through the speaker.
âYes,â I replied, my heart rate speeding in a new direction.
âYou have one minute.â
I held my breath. Was Giselle really going to let me talk to Dante?
A door groaned open, followed by a low thump . The sound of creaky footsteps increased in volume until they stopped.
âAurora?â
Danteâs voice flooded me with relief.
âDante! Are you okay? Has Giselle harmed you in any way?â
Fane folded his arms and leaned back, watching me. I turned my back to him.
âIâm okay,â Dante said solemnly.
He didnât sound okay. His voice was withdrawn and moody. Well, what did I expect? Iâd feel the same way if Iâd been imprisoned against my will. I thought heâd perk up a little if he heard my voice.
âWeâre going to get you out of there. Weâll have Jared this Friday. Once we capture him Iâll demand an exchange.â
âTommy,â Dante said as though he hadnât listened to a word Iâd just said.
My chest tightened.
âTell me you didnât forget him.â
Far from it. The golden retriever had been running around in my mind from the moment Melcher told Levi to scoop him up.
âOf course not.â
Dante breathed a sigh of relief. âI suppose I can hang tight a little longer, though the accommodations leave something to be desired.â
âWhere is she keeping you?â I asked, eager to move away from the subject of Danteâs dog.
âIn a basement with a vampire.â
Oh god, if Gavin was locked up with someone he thought to be humanâ¦
âHe hasnât tried toâ¦â
âShe gives him plenty of blood,â Dante said. âThe vampâs not interested in me, anyway, says this is what he gets for going out with Valerie. Is he a target?â
âNo, but he and Valerie are going out.â
âThe girl said she stabbed Valerie, and sheâd do the same to anyone who didnât do what she wants.â
âMelcher said Valerieâs going to be fine,â I said.
âAnd you? Are you all right?â
I balled up my toes inside my sneakers.
âI just want to get this over with and get you back,â I said, regretting my word choice as soon as I finished speaking.
I wanted to get Dante back safe and sound, not back, backâas in back together. Not that weâd been together, though Dante had tried and Iâd never gotten a chance to set him straight.
My shoulders hunched into my neck. Hopefully Fane knew what I meant. I turned and found him staring at me steadily, expression unreadable. I cleared my throat.
âI want to help you,â Dante said, âBut the she-vamp wonât let me out.â
âIâll get Jared.â
âYou need me,â Dante said.
âIâve got
