Ken-doll hair cut and brown eyes.
“What time is it?” I asked, my voice a hoarse croak.
“She needs some water,” the man said to Kristos who nodded to someone behind him. The man smiled down at me. “Glad to see you awake. You slept all day and it’s now just about ten p.m.”
“Am I okay?” I checked my arms and legs. My shoulder was raw with small wounds, and, no doubt, my face wasn’t much better.
“Lots of superficial abrasions on your shoulder and neck, but those will heal fairly quickly. You have a deep gash on your palm that I’ve stitched up and you have an IV to replace fluids.” The man pointed to an IV bag hanging overhead, using the wooden bed post as an IV stand. “I’m Doctor Martin by the way.”
“Myra Danson, but you probably knew that already. Thank you, doctor.” I pushed myself into a sitting position and accepted the glass of water Kristos handed to me. I drank it one long gulp, not even stopping to breathe, and gave him the empty glass. “Could I have some more?”
This time whomever Kristos was nodding to brought a pitcher and I drained it with greedy slurps; my throat was as dry as the Sahara. Dr. Martin checked my blood pressure and pulse while I drank.
“How is she, doctor?” Kristos asked.
“Her blood pressure has risen to normal levels, which is a good sign. Other than almost going into shock, her injuries are minor. I would recommend she take it easy tonight and keep the IV in. I’ll take it out tomorrow and then she can just slowly return to normal activity from there.”
“Will there be any scarring?” Kristos’ gaze scanned my injuries, lingering on my face.
I paused mid-gulp at that. I hadn’t even thought of scarring. Unbidden, the memory of Madame Rouge noting how my skin was unmarked rose in my mind. I wasn’t particularly vain, but I had no desire to be maimed for life either.
“Maybe some minor discoloration. It just depends on her skin. If you are concerned about it, I would consult with a dermatologist. I can recommend someone if you like,” the doctor said.
“I think that would be a good idea. Just leave the information with Orion on your way out,” Kristos said.
The doctor nodded and turned to me. “I’ll be back later to check on you. Rest as much as you can, alright?”
I smiled and nodded. “Sure. Thanks.”
The doctor left and Kristos and I just stared at each other. He looked fit and trim, I noted. I had gotten the worst of last night’s adventures, but I was alive, and... not wearing my dress . The realization dawned on me that someone had removed my dress and put me in a white undershirt.
I plucked at the v-neck t-shirt and looked anywhere but at Kristos. “Did you um...”
    “Take off your dress?”
I nodded, staring very intently at a loose thread in the blue comforter on my bed.
“And see you naked?” There was a teasing note in his voice that told me he found my modesty funny. “Yes, and the view was stunning.”
    I bit my lip.
His tone became more serious. “Myra, it was an emergency. I had no idea how extensive your injuries were and the dress was in the way. I didn’t see anything I wasn’t going to see anyway, right?” When I didn’t answer, he pushed. “Right?”
    “I guess,” I said. “How’s the dress?”
“Dirty, but otherwise intact. I sent it out to the cleaners.”
“Thanks.” I gave him a shy smile.
“Well, this is awkward,” Kristos finally said.
“I thought pretty much all of it was awkward.” I smiled as I spoke so he would know I was trying to be funny.
“I can see how you might think that, but, for me, almost getting a courtesan killed is a new low. I’m sorry.” His expression was contrite.
I lifted a shoulder in a shrug. “It’s not like you planned it, right?”
“No and you’ll be happy to know I fired all the security guards from last night.”
    “Did you find the shooter?”
“We’re following up some leads,” he said. He broke eye contact and his
