drink “TxT” By this point father was even more confused. “Don’t you see – it works on so many levels? It’s short, it’s punchy, it relates to the old product but its powerful – and the final clincher – kids will relate to it because it’s an abbreviation for text – which mostly uses nothing but abbreviations!”
I was ecstatic but father just shook his head and shuffled out of the room smiling as he went. I tried the new name out on the product testing groups and they loved it. That was the final hurdle cleared. I used what was left of grandfather’s money and modified part of the old Tonic operation into a bottling and canning production line and we were ready for business.
When my Great grandfather was at this point with the original Tonic, he had struggled to get his product noticed. If it hadn’t been for Francis then very few people outside of Wishton would have ever heard of it. I wasn’t going to let the same thing happen to me. Once again I used all my new-found knowledge and began to push the new TxT drink as hard as I could. Social media, product placement, paying people to hold the cans during televised events – I tried every trick in the book – and it paid off big time.
Within two months of the launch I was already looking for new premises to create a new canning factory. That was 15 years ago and since then we have gone from strength to strength.”
Ed paused. “Wow, I seem to have been talking for a very long time and I still haven’t got to the crux of the matter. Harry – maybe you can make a better job of this than I have?”
Harry smiled. “I’m sure you have both realised by now just how passionate Ed is about this company – I’m surprised he managed to bring himself to stop!”
He continued. “15 years ago Ed created a very successful energy drink. Sales throughout the world today are massive – the TxT brand is still the main product line for this company but we have many more strings to our bow these days.
I became involved ten years ago when a mutual friend introduced me to Ed. As you both know my area of medical expertise concerns the human brain – in particular with regard to dementia and Alzheimer’s. I was seeking help to fund my research and Ed became interested. To cut a long story short I went to work for Ed as a clinical advisor in certain health-related areas – and in return Ed agreed to fund a research facility here in Wishton. That’s one reason that you don’t see much of me these days. I still spend some time doing NHS work at my GP practise a couple of mornings a week, then I have my brain injury patients at the hospital – and whatever time is left I devote to research.”
â€œYou missed out the football team.” smiled Ed.
â€œAh yes – how could I forget that!” laughed Harry, “In addition to all my other hats I am now also a director of this club that I have supported all my life. To be honest that doesn’t take up much time and it’s about the only way I relax! I’m also the official club doctor but I have a very good team to handle the sports injuries.”
â€œSo there you have it,” said Ed, “but we have just skimmed the surface. The holding company owns the drinks business, a football club, a research company and a few other smaller operations. We also have interests back in the US and I’m planning to expand more in the future. And if one day Wishton Clough could get into the Premier League – well that would mean global exposure for all the products.”
Ed stopped. “Well Sue, what do you think?”
Sue looked around the table and just as she was about to open her mouth the door opened and the kids fell noisily into the room. “I think I have just been saved by the bell!”
